What Documents Do You Need for an Insurance Quote?

In this guide

A better insurance quote starts with better information. You do not need every document before asking for help, but the right details can make comparison faster, cleaner, and more accurate.

Auto insurance quote documents

For auto insurance, gather driver names, dates of birth, license information, vehicle VINs, garaging address, current declarations page, lender or lease details, prior claims or violations, and desired coverage limits. If there are youthful drivers or business use, mention that early.

Home and flood insurance quote documents

For home insurance, prepare the property address, year built, square footage, roof age and material, construction type, occupancy, mortgagee details, current declarations page, wind mitigation reports, inspections, and prior claims. For flood insurance, add flood zone information, elevation certificate if available, foundation type, building and contents limit preferences, and lender requirements.

Business insurance quote documents

For commercial general liability, workers compensation, and commercial auto, gather legal business name, address, operations, revenue, payroll, employee duties, vehicle VINs, driver lists, contracts, certificate requests, subcontractor details, prior claims, and current policy documents. Contracts are especially important when additional insured wording or specific limits are required.

Life, health, and annuity planning details

For life insurance, useful details include age, health basics, tobacco use, desired coverage amount, term length, beneficiaries, income, debts, and current policies. For health insurance, prepare household members, ZIP code, doctors, prescriptions, current coverage, enrollment timing, and group census details when applicable. For annuities, prepare retirement timeline, income goals, risk tolerance, liquidity needs, beneficiaries, and existing annuity statements.

Specialty coverage details

For boat insurance, prepare year, make, model, length, motor type, value, trailer, operators, storage, and navigation area. For RV insurance, prepare year, make, model, VIN, class or trailer type, storage, drivers, value, lienholder, and whether the RV is recreational or full time. For umbrella insurance, gather current liability limits, household drivers, properties, boats, RVs, pets, and prior claims.

What if you are missing a document?

You can still request help. An advisor can usually start with basic details and then identify what is missing. For example, a VIN can be added later, a wind mitigation report can be requested, and a contract can be reviewed once the client sends the wording. The important part is to explain the deadline, the coverage type, and the reason for the quote.

Quote questions worth answering early

Be ready to answer whether coverage is for a new purchase, renewal, lender request, lease, contract, certificate, claim concern, employee change, driver change, or planning review. That context helps prioritize the right documents and avoid comparing policies that do not solve the real problem.

Frequently asked quote question

Do I need my current policy to compare quotes? It is very helpful but not always required. A current declarations page gives the advisor a clear baseline for limits, deductibles, named insureds, vehicles, properties, endorsements, and renewal dates.

When you are ready, use the quote request form or contact an ALPHA Surance advisor. The team can identify missing details and explain why each document matters before you choose coverage.
